"Coffee on the Map"

Published in Las Cruces Magazine, Spring-Summer 2016

We were finishing lunch at a window table in the Church Street Cafe, when Kev's phone rang and I motioned for him to take the call. I could hear a female voice on the other end, and glancing at his face, I guessed this was the call he was anticipating.

Rising from the table, I picked up my glass of wine and wandered out to the patio, leaving Kev to talk in private. Soaking up the gorgeous Albuquerque afternoon, I closed my eyes and breathed deeply. If anyone had been looking, I'm sure I had a silly smile on my face, but I didn't care. I'm a Chicago girl, by birth and by choice, but I had been falling in love with New Mexico for the past four days.

"Waiting Out The War"

Published on WOW! Women On Writing, Spring 2015 Flash Fiction Contest

She spotted the empty seat across from me and sank down. Just as she settled her handbag beside her, the train jerked into motion. With a linen handkerchief, she dabbed prettily at the perspiration on her face and at a couple tears escaping down one cheek.

This had been my daily train for a couple years and I'd seen her at a distance a few times. Slim figure, fairly tall. A proper dark skirt and jacket, the perfect foil for her lush red hair. It was always beautifully done up in a victory roll, a style which even I recognized as fading in popularity. This woman was the epitome of 1940's style.

She folded her hands in her lap and looked at me. I nodded and touched my hat, wondering if I should speak.

"Circus Blood"

Published on WOW! Women On Writing. Winter 2015 Flash Fiction Contest

It was on a bright, starry night that the traveling circus rolled into town. The kind of clear, still night that made it hard to remain unheard and unseen climbing out my bedroom window and sneaking through town.

It was 1919, and the town was not unlike any other small town across the nation--mourning its influenza victims, its dead soldiers, and its drab sameness. Crisp leaves in shades of brown and tan seemed determined to match the hues of folks' working clothes, dilapidated houses, and dead lawns.
